One rocket targets Baghdad’s Green Zone

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — A rocket landed near the US embassy in Baghdad’s Green Zone late Wednesday night, according to the Iraqi Security Media Cell.

"A rocket targeted an area inside the Green Zone in Baghdad, the rocket was launched from an area near the Shaaib Stadium,” said a press release by Iraq’s security forces.

The attack has not been claimed by any group, but the US has attributed similar strikes in the past to Iran-backed armed groups. No casualties have been reported.

This is the third rocket attack to hit Baghdad since Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi was sworn in on May 7. 

A rocket targeted an area near Baghdad International Airport on June 8. The airport hosts an American military base, as well as the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center, a branch of the US embassy which has been subject to repeated rocket fire in recent years.

The Green Zone hosts several Iraqi government ministries, the federal parliament, and foreign diplomatic missions. It was targeted by a spate of rocket attacks at the beginning of the year, with soaring US-Iran tensions following the US killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani at Baghdad's airport on January 3.

Iraqi army bases hosting Coalition troops have also been the target of rocket attacks suspected to have been launched by Iran-backed militias.
