Army says three more Mosul neighborhoods taken from ISIS
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Three more neighborhoods in Mosul’s northeastern areas were declared free from ISIS militants on Wednesday, as the Iraqi army pushed deeper towards the Tigris River with the aim of reaching the city center.
The chief of the Iraqi anti-terror forces told a press conference that the second phase of the fight against ISIS started after a large number of the eastern neighborhoods were cleared of ISIS.
“After they were reclaimed from ISIS militants, the Iraqi counter-terror forces cleared the Qadisiya2, Mahrouq and Abbadi neighborhoods of ISIS remnants,” Abdulwahab Saaedi said.
Iraqi troops have driven out ISIS militants from 23 small and large neighborhoods since day one, mostly in the eastern outskirts of the city, but are likely to face stiffer street clashes as the army moves closer to the central parts of Mosul.
The Iraqi Special Forces announced on Tuesday that they were just five kilometers from the Tigris river, which bisects the city, after gaining control of the al-Zuhur neighborhood, one of the largest on the eastern bank of the war-torn city.
