ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region’s presidency and prime minister condemned the targeting of Baghdad International Airport with rockets on Friday.
Iraqi local media reported that at least six rockets targeted the vicinity of Baghdad International Airport which houses US troops. The Iraqi ministry of transportation said in a statement on Friday that the rockets damaged one of out-of-service planes of Iraqi Airways which was perched in the vicinity of the airport.
“We condemn the targeting of Baghdad airport with rockets. Constant attempts to destabilise stability and security is a dangerous development that must be prevented. Presence of danger and threat on the security of the airport will cause great harm to Iraq and its reputation,’ read a tweet from the Kurdistan Region presidency.
The Region’s Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also condemned the attack “in the strongest terms,” urging Iraqi leaders to “unanimously do the same.”
“The repeated attacks, including on Erbil International Airport in the past threaten the country, its peoples and our shared security,” added PM Barzani in his tweet.
Iraqi PM Mustafa al-Kadhimi described the attack as “terrorist act,” saying targeting civilian aircraft is “a new attempt to undermine Iraq’s reputation.”
He called on leaders and political parties to condemn the attack "clearly.”
Baghdad’s Green Zone and other US facilities in Iraq are often attacked with rockets. Pro-Iran militia groups have been widely blamed for most of the attacks.
No group has shouldered Friday’s rocket attack.
