ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani, Iraq's prime minister-designate, on Tuesday asked the country’s parliamentary speaker to hold a session by the end of the week to vote on the ministerial candidates of his cabinet, two weeks after he was named into the position.

Sudani was tasked with forming Iraq’s next government on October 13, after more than a year of political bickering since the parliamentary elections in October 2021. The PM-designate will have 30 days to name all ministers of his cabinet, or risk losing the position if he fails to do so.

In a letter addressed to Parliamentary Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi, Sudani requests the head of the legislative body to set Thursday as the date for holding a voting session on the cabinet and the ministerial curriculum.

The names of the candidates for Sudani’s cabinet line-up are not disclosed in the letter, but he specifies to the speaker that they will be sent “later”.

A statement from Sudani’s office on Sunday said that the PM-designate continues his talks with the political powers that have decided to participate in the new government, adding that the names of the candidates for the country’s next government will be announced once they have completed reviewing their legal background.

Halbousi said late Wednesday in a statement that the legislature will meet on Thursday at 2pm to vote on Sudani's cabinet.
