ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - At least two rockets targeted Zilkan military base hosting Turkish troops in northern Iraq on Friday afternoon, a local official told Rudaw while noting that no casualties were reported.
The rockets fell outside the base and did not cause any injuries or casualties, Mohammed Amin Gharib, the mayor of Zilkan subdistrict told Rudaw.
Home to Turkish personnel in Zilkan, the base is located 10 kilometers away from the town of Bashiqa in Nineveh province. It is also referred to as Bashiqa base.
The base has been a target of at least seven rocket and drone attacks since the start of the year. No group has claimed responsibility for the assaults.
One person died when Zilkan base was targeted in late May.
Turkey-Iraq relations were strained in the wake of the deployment of some 150 Turkish soldiers to Iraq in December 2015. Turkish troops were deployed to the area on the pretext of training Iraqi and Kurdish forces in their fight against the Islamic State (ISIS).
The troops are still present in the area despite calls from Iraqi officials for them to leave.
