BAGHDAD, Iraq — Thousands of Iraqis protested in Baghdad on Tuesday, demanding justice for slain activists and protesters. Two were killed as demonstrators clashed with security forces who used tear gas and live ammunition.

“I lost my son in 2016 after being detained by security forces for participating in protests,” protester Dawood Ismail told Rudaw English.

Ali Ibrahim’s two brothers were killed in Tahrir Square in October 2019. “I have no job and no future. I have nothing to lose,” he said.

Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, ahead of the demonstration, ordered security forces to protect protesters and banned live ammunition.

The violence was condemned by Iraq’s Observatory for Human Rights.

Nearly 600 protesters and security force members have been killed since the anti-government demonstrations began in October 2019, including at least 34 activists killed in targeted assassinations.
