The war against ISIS destroyed Iraq’s Anbar province. More than a million people displaced. More than 300 schools, 45 health centers, 84 bridges were destroyed.

Government officials and tribal leaders came together to find a way to rebuild their province.

“All the tribes of the province, and also the local government, upon the recommendations of his excellency the head of the council of ministers and UNAMI, and all international organizations, sought to return the displaced families from the camps,” says Ibrahim Janabi, mayor of Ramadi.

“And then for life to return to normal we worked throughout the years for the sake of enabling the governorate to play an actual role.”

The return of IDPs and revitalization of the province is a priority.

Shiekh Falah Qaraghouli, head of the Qaraghouli tribe says, “There are some families whose sons were in the ranks of ISIS. They are dead. The family is innocent. There is no need to bring them before the law or demand compensation from them.”

Revitalizing Anbar needs $5 billion. But in the 2019 budget bill, only 139 billion dinars ($116.7 million) is allocated to the province.
