Iraqi killed in Sudan fighting: Foreign ministry
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - An Iraqi citizen was killed as a result of the heavy clashes between government forces and armed rebels in Sudan, announced the Iraqi foreign ministry on Sunday.
Intense fighting in Sudan between forces of army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his deputy Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the commander of the powerful paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) more commonly referred to as Hemeti, has killed over 400 people and injured thousands more since the clashes erupted last week.
“An Iraqi citizen was killed as a result of the events taking place in Sudan,” foreign ministry spokesperson Ahmed al-Sahaf told Iraqi state media.
The UK-based New Arab earlier in the day reported that an Iraqi man from Salahaddin in his 50s and his daughter, who had been residing in Sudan for years, were killed in the clashes, citing an unnamed member of the Iraqi parliament.
Sahaf on Sunday morning said that 14 Iraqis had been evacuated from the Sudanese capital Khartoum to Port Sudan “at their request,” a day after he announced the evacuation of the Iraqi diplomatic staff from the city.
Iraq has allocated two phone numbers for its citizens residing in Sudan to register their requests for evacuation.
Multiple ceasefires have been agreed between the Sudanese army and the RSF, but they have all been ignored.
According to the latest tally from the World Health Organization, more than 420 people have been killed and over 3,700 wounded in the fighting across Sudan, but many place the death toll to be higher than reported figures.
