UPDATED: Tens of civilians killed in triple ISIS car bomb east of Mosul
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The number of those killed in three consecutive car bomb attacks in the liberated neighborhood of Gogjali in Mosul has risen to 30, with another 60 wounded, according to a security source.
The casualties include both civilians and security forces Major Tahseen Jaburi from the Nineveh Police said.
"After three car bombs in the Gogjali area east of Mosul, the final count has risen to 11 killed, all of them civilians, and 44 wounded, the majority of whom are civilians. And nine of them are from the security forces and Hashd al-Ashairi," Jaburi said, citing initial casualty figures that have since risen.
The Hashd al-Ashairi is a Sunni militia.
"We were in the main market in the Gogjali area, and one of the car bombs sent by ISIS detonated. After a short time it was followed by another car bomb," a wounded man rushed to a hospital in Erbil, told Rudaw.
Erbil health authorities sent many ambulances to nearby Bartella to transport the wounded, a Rudaw correspondent reported.
Jaburi said a curfew was imposed in Gogjali after the attacks.
Many of the wounded were brought to Erbil to receive treatment.
Erbil's department of health warned on Thursday that its hospitals are overwhelmed by the thousands of wounded civilians and fighters being cared for in hospitals.
"An estimated 7,595 people have been rushed to Erbil hospitals within the past 65 days," said Saman Barzinji, head of the health department in Erbil, on Thursday.
He called for assistance from Baghdad and the international community. "A catastrophe may occur if a shortage of medicine continues," he said.
