ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Iraqi parliament on Wednesday voted for the extension of the electoral commission’s term for another six months, nearly a month before the upcoming local election.
The term of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) will end on December 7. The legislature on Wednesday extended it for another six months, reported state media.
Iraq will hold a provincial election on December 18, the first of its kind since 2013.
Despite reported efforts to postpone the vote, the Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani has repeatedly said the polls would be held on time.
The IHEC comprises nine commissioners from various political parties.
Electoral campaign for the local vote has begun. The Kurdish parties in the disputed provinces of Kirkuk and Nineveh failed to enter the election as one list due to disagreements.
The Kurdistan Region provinces will not partake in the provincial council election. However, the extension of the commission’s term is critical for the Region’s February 25 parliamentary election because it is assigned to supervise it.
