ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The preliminary results of Iraq’s nationwide population census will be announced within two days, an Iraqi planning ministry official told Rudaw, as the country enters the second day of the process.
“The population census results will be announced within the next two days,” Iraqi planning ministry spokesperson Abdul Zahra al-Hindawi told Rudaw on Wednesday.
Iraq on Wednesday began its two-day registration period for the first nationwide census since 1987. The process will provide a clearer picture of the population across Iraqi provinces, including data on families, ages, and genders.
Hindawi noted that “the population percentages have not yet been determined, especially since the census process is still ongoing.”
After confirming the records taken on Wednesday and Thursday, the next phase will begin which includes recording more detailed information.
Last week, Hindawi told Rudaw that “the final census results will take more than two months to be announced.”
The final results will include detailed information on health, education, employment, and housing conditions, according to the ministry spokesperson.
Iraq last conducted a census in 1997 without the Kurdistan Region; the last census including provinces in the Kurdistan Region was in 1987.
Estimates now put Iraq’s population around 50 million. A census planned for 2020 was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
