British ISIS militant launches suicide attack in Anbar, Omar al-Shishani body found
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A British Islamic State (ISIS) militant known as “Abu Musa al-Britani” attacked an Iraqi Army convoy on Monday with a car bomb in the war-torn Iraqi province of Anbar.
This is according to an ISIS statement released by the group via their account on the Telegram messaging application. They claim that al-Britani succeeded in “killing nearly 30” in his suicide attack.
The Iraqi military, however, have said that the only person killed in the attack was al-Britani himself.
The convoy was reportedly leaving Ayn al-Assad military base in Anbar and heading toward Kubaysah when it was attacked. Sunni fighters aligned with the Iraqi military were also part of the convoy.
On Sunday Iraqi forces discovered the dead body of top ISIS commander Omar al-Shishani amid the cleaning of Ramadi’s eastern area of Albu Obaid an Iraqi army commander said.
“A unit of Iraqi army in the Albu Obaid area east of Ramadi found 10 dead bodies of ISIS militants,” said Ismail al-Mahlawi the commander of Iraqi army in Anbar province. “One of the bodies was the senior ISIS commander Omar al-Shishani.”
Earlier this month US defense officials said that al-Shishani was killed in an air strike in the town of Shaddadi in Syria.
Also on Sunday ISIS launched multiple suicide attacks which killed at least two dozen members of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) in Anbar on Sunday. An Iraqi military source told Al Jazeera that at least 24 ISF members were killed and 12 others wounded in Haqlaniyah, which is southwest of Anbar’s Hadeetha city.
