Unidentified armed men injure two Iraqi policemen in Diyala

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - An unidentified group late Friday attacked Iraqi police in Diyala province, injuring at least two policemen, according to a police spokesperson.

Nihad Mohammed, spokesperson for Diyala police, told Rudaw that the armed men used light and heavy weapons, injuring two policemen.

“Iraqi police and army are on the way to here from Baghdad but the attackers escaped the incident area and our forces are looking for them,” he added.

It is not clear who carried out the attack but the Islamic State (ISIS) has previously conducted similar attacks against the security forces in the area.

ISIS has not claimed responsibility for the attack.

The terror group seized large swathes of Iraqi and Syrian territory in 2014 and declared a so-called “caliphate.” While the group was declared territorially defeated in Iraq in 2017, it still continues to pose serious security risks through hit-and-run attacks, bombings, and abductions across several provinces.

ISIS is particularly active in areas disputed by Erbil and Baghdad, including parts of Kirkuk, Salahaddin, and Diyala.
