Top Kurdish officials condemn ISIS deadly attack on Iraqi army
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region’s senior officials condemned the Friday attack by the Islamic State (ISIS) on one the Iraqi army’s military bases in Diyala province which killed eleven soldiers.
Ten soldiers and one officer were killed when an Iraqi base was attacked early Friday. ISIS claimed responsibility later in the same day.
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani condemned the “terrorist act,” stressing the need for “full coordination and coordination between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad to eliminate ISIS.”
The Region’s PM spoke on the phone with his Iraqi counterpart Mustafa al-Kadhimi.
“I’m deeply troubled by the continued ISIS terrorist activities in the country. Tonight, I have spoken with PM @MAKadhimi to condemn the recent attack on the Iraqi army and convey my sympathies to the Iraqi people,” PM Barzani said in a tweet.
“PM @MAKadhimi and I agreed that the recent attacks, including on the Peshmerga, are a solemn reminder of the threat the terror group still poses against us all ,” he added.
Iraqi premiere’s office said in a tweet that he and Barzani discussed raising of security preparedness “to defeat the plans of the terrorist grops, step up the the pursuit of ISIS remnants, destroy its hideouts and eliminate all its incubators.”
The Friday attack has also been condemned by the US Embassy in Baghdad and the United Nations mission in Iraq.
