ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The United States’ ambassador to Iraq on Sunday expressed her appreciation for the Iraqi government’s efforts in pursuit of the perpetrators of an American citizen’s killing in Baghdad earlier this month, during a meeting with the country’s prime minister.

Iraq’s PM Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani received the US Ambassador to Iraq Alina Romanowski, discussing Baghdad-Washington bilateral ties and the need to increase cooperation between the two sides.

Romanowski “appreciated the efforts of the Iraqi government and security authorities in pursuing the perpetrators of the murder of American citizen Stephen Troell, and the rapid movement on this track,” according to a statement from Sudani’s office on Sunday.

Troell, a US national who worked as an English teacher in Baghdad, was shot dead in the Iraqi capital on November 8. PM Sudani order a probe into the incident immediately after the killing, in hopes of reaching the perpetrators as soon as possible.

Sudani and Romanowski also addressed continuing cooperation between Baghdad and Washington in “the war on terrorism” and coordination in hunting down remnants of the Islamic State (ISIS) in the country.

The US troops toppled Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s regime in 2003, remaining in the country until 2011. Three years later, ISIS attacked Syria and Iraq, invading swathes of territory, leading Baghdad to invite US troops back in the country to help in the fight against the militant group.
