ERBIL, Kurdistan Regions - Two Katyusha rockets fell on Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF, or Hashd al-Shaabi) positions in northern Salahaddin province on Thursday night, causing no casualties, the mayor of Tuz Khurmatu told Rudaw on Friday.
The rockets landed near the Bastamli and Chardakhli areas in the province's north, with the launchers also found in the same area, according to Tuz Khurmatu mayor Hassan Zain al-Abdin.
Zain al-Abdin said that one of the missiles landed in an area between the Saraya al-Salam militia forces, founded by Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, and a PMF force. The whereabouts of the second missile remains unknown.
"The rockets may have just been a message," the mayor said, adding that the security forces have launched an investigation into the attack.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. However, similar rocket attacks in the country are often attributed to Iranian-backed Iraqi militias.
Iraq has recently seen a spate of rocket attacks. Earlier in March, a Katyusha rocket struck the house of an Iraqi intelligence officer in Baghdad, causing material damages.
Last month, at least one rocket landed kilometers away from Ain al-Asad military base in Anbar province, which houses American troops.
