ISIS says Saddam’s nephew dies battling for Baiji
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Documents released by the Islamic State group on social media claim Ibrahim al-Sabawi, former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s half-nephew, died near Baiji where intense fighting is still underway with security forces for a key refinery.
Sabawi, the oldest son of Saddam’s half-brother Hasan al-Sabawi, was a known member of the jihadist group ISIS. He was accused by Shiite militias of planning and participating in the Camp Speicher massacre in which ISIS is believed to have killed nearly 1,600 Iraqi Air Force cadets.
In a series of Tweets and shocking photos posted in June to their social-media sites, ISIS militants were showing slaughtering the Camp Speicher victims.
Months later, during the Tikrit military operation, the graves were identified by a special Iraqi government committee. Shiite leaders have called on the international community to recognize mass killing as genocide.
Hasan al-Sabawi, who was intelligence chief for the outlawed Baathist party, was captured by the United States after the fall of Saddam’s regime. He died from cancer in 2013.
