German deputy FM praises Iraq’s efforts in achieving regional security

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein on Saturday met with the German Deputy Foreign Minister Tobias Lindner on the sidelines of the annual Munich Security Council (MSC) conference in Germany, where Lindner commended Iraq’s efforts in fighting terrorism in the region. 

According to a statement from the Iraqi foreign ministry, Lindner reiterated German support for Iraq, praising its efforts in combating terrorism and ensured German support to the region, while touching on Iraq’s means to solve the refugee crisis.

The Iraqi FM indicated the important role Germany plays in Iraq in the political, economic, and military fields, and stressed upon Iraq’s vital need for German support, especially with regards to the country’s economy. 

“The stability of the region is linked to the stability of Iraq, and it needs the support of friends like Germany, which occupies a privileged position among Iraqis,” said Hussein.

Last month, the German parliament voted in favor of a motion by the government to extend its troops mission in Iraq for nine months, with the European country having 500 soldiers in Iraq.

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Saturday expressed his gratitude to Germany for its support to Iraq and the region.
