Shiite militias: Iran is our main source of weapons

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region –  Iran is the main provider of weapons, ammunition and supplies for Shiite militias working with the Iraqi Army in the fight against ISIS, a spokesperson for the Shiite groups has said.

“The weapons and ammunition the Iraqi army and PMF [People's Mobilization Forces] use in the fight against ISIS in Salahadin province have been provided by Iran without limits or conditions,” said Ahmad Asadi, the PMF spokesperson.

Iran has also reportedly dispatched advanced missile systems to Iraqi army bases in Salahadin province to help retake areas still controlled by ISIS.

The Shiite-led government of Iran has been actively involved in Iraq’s security issues since ISIS militants overran parts of the country seeking to create a Sunni-Islamic caliphate.

Iran’s Quds Force under the leadership of Qassim Sulaimani has been backing Shiite militias in the ongoing attack on ISIS-held Tikrit and other operations against the extremists.

Sulaimani has been reportedly directing tens of thousands of Shiite fighters battling ISIS in Iraq since last year.
