Iraq launches eighth phase of anti-ISIS operation in Mosul
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraq on Thursday launched a fresh phase of an ongoing operation targeting Islamic State (ISIS) remnants in the northern province of Mosul, state media reported, with the operation seeking to remove elements of the group from the area.
The operation, dubbed “Solid Will,” is an extension of an expansive effort by the Iraqi army, the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF, or Hashd al-Shaabi in Arabic), and Kurdish Peshmerga forces seeking to eliminate the presence of ISIS from the country.
“The operation aims to pursue terrorist elements and wanted persons, as well as cleaning the land of the remnants of ISIS gangs and destroying their hideouts,” according to a statement from Iraq’s Security Media Cell. https://www.ina.iq/170699--.html
The latest phase of the operation involves the participation of the Iraqi army, police, and the PMF, two months after the seventh phase was launched in Salahaddin and Diyala.
The operation has been conducted in various Iraqi provinces in its other phases, mostly in the disputed areas of Kirkuk, Salahaddin, and Diyala between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Iraqi federal government.
ISIS seized control of vast parts of Iraq in 2014 during its brazen rise to power, but the terror group was declared territorially defeated in 2017. While the group remains devoid of any territorial control, it still continues to pose security risks through abductions, hit-and-run attacks, and bombings, especially in the disputed territories.
