ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraq’s foreign ministry on Wednesday welcomed the recent ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas in Gaza as one that came after “great sacrifices” made by Palestinians.
In a statement, the ministry said it “welcomes the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, which came after great sacrifices and great suffering of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.”
Baghdad further thanked Qatar, the United States, and Egypt for brokering the agreement.
“These efforts reflect the importance of international cooperation to stop the suffering of civilians and ensure stability in the region,” it said, calling for the swift delivery of aid to Gaza.
A landmark ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was announced on Wednesday which involved negotiations from Qatar, the US, and Egypt, and after 15 months of brutal conflict between both sides.
The statement also stressed the “importance of intensifying regional efforts to rebuild the areas that were destroyed by the [Israeli] aggression, in a way that ensures the normal return of life and improves the population’s living conditions.”
Iraq is a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause.
Palestinian Hamas militants launched a large-scale incursion into southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing more than 1,170 people, according to Israeli figures. Israel responded with a massive ongoing offensive in Gaza, killing more than 46,000 people, mostly civilians, according to the Palestinian health ministry.
The ceasefire involves the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and the release of Israeli hostages in Hamas captivity.
It will be monitored by the three mediating countries.
