ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — ISIS militants have continued attacks in the mountainous Hamrin areas outside of Tuz Kurmatu and Qara Tapa targeting a family in the village of Homarmandan on Tuesday.
“An ISIS bomb exploded near an Arab family in the village of Homarmandan. The explosion killed five members of the family. Their bodies have been taken to the Qara Tapa hospital,” Wahab Ahmed, councilor of the town of Qara Tapa, told Rudaw.
Recent reports indicate that many ISIS commanders and fighters from Mosul have relocated to the Hamrin Mountains.
Ahmed added ISIS movements in Qara Tapa have increased a lot. They have blown up three electricity towers over the past two days, cutting off the electricity supply to Qara Tapa and its surrounding villages for 48 hours.
ISIS recently declared their self-styled state (wilayah) in the Hamrin region.
Qara Tapa is just north of Lake Hamrin and on a road that leads to Tuz Khurmatu and then on to Kirkuk.
On Friday, three Peshmerga were killed in an ISIS attack in Daquq, south of Kirkuk. Another two were killed on July 29 in an ISIS attack near Tuz Khurmatu.
On July 26, militants launched a surprise attack against the Kakei village of Alud Pasha south of Kirkuk where they killed four people, three of whom were members of one family.
Kurdish forces have complained that operations against ISIS in Tel Afar have been prioritized over an offensive in the areas south of Kirkuk and Hawija.
