Twin bomb blast kill 9 in Iraq's capital

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region--Twin bomb blasts targeted a military checkpoint and a fruit and vegetable storehouse in the capital city of Baghdad on Wednesday, killing seven Iraqi army soldiers, two civilians and wounding many others.

A suicide bomber detonated explosives at a military checkpoint near Yusufiyah district to the south of Baghdad, killing seven soldiers.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

A bomb planted near a fruit and vegetable storehouse detonated, killing two and wounding eight others, a military source in the Iraqi Interior Ministry confirmed to Rudaw.

"Due to the detonation of a bomb near a fruit and vegetable storehouse, two people were killed and eight others wounded," said the source, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The source added that "security forces immediately arrived at the site of the bombing. The wounded were rushed to the hospital and the dead to the morgue."

In another development, according to Iranian Press TV, Iraqi security forces on the same day launched a military raid against the remaining ISIS elements in Anbar district, notably in Albu Rishah district, "killing Fouad al-Ziabi, a senior commander of the group, and a number of his companions."

An operation of the Iraqi army and Shiite militia to take Anbar's Fallujah from the Islamic State (ISIS) started three weeks ago, but the advance has been slow and the forces have yet to breach the city's defenses.
