SHINGAL, Iraq — Muslims in Shingal have told Rudaw of coexistence with Yazidis in the area amid ongoing Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
"This is the first Eid we are celebrating in our village. More than 200 Arab families have returned. There are 30 Yazidi families living in our village. We coexist with each other, having no problems," said Mohammed Mishaan, the mukhtar of Gir Shabak village.
More than 300 Shiite families have returned to their homes in Shingal, a Yazidi-majority district which was ravaged by the Islamic State (ISIS) in 2014.
"We’ve come from the north of Shingal to congratulate our Shiite brothers. We’re gathered at the house of Sayid Abbass al-Araji. A lot of Yazidi and Muslim brothers are here," said Yazidi local Sheikh Khudeda.
According to Shingal mayor Fahad Hamid, more than 3,000 Yazidi and Shiite families have returned to Shingal. No Christian families have returned to the area.
