Rockets hit Iraq's Balad Air Base: media
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — At least three rockets targeted Iraq's Balad Air Base, located north of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, on Monday night, according to state media.
Reuters news agency reported that five of the rockets hit the base, while two more landed in a rural area outside of the base. However, state media reports that only three rockets landed outside the base.
Iraq's security media cell says that the rockets were launched from Saadiyat al-Shat in Diyala province, claiming that only two landed outside the base. A nearby civilian house was damaged in the attack, according to the cell.
Rocket attacks on foreign military and diplomatic sites in Iraq are frequent, especially since Washington's assassination of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy leader of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF, or Hashd al-Shaabi).
One contractor working for a US defense company was injured when rockets targeted Balad Air Base in February.
