Multiple casualties in car bombing in Tikrit
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - At least 11 people were killed and 41 others wounded in a car bombing on Wednesday in the city of Tikrit in Salahaddin province, a local official told Rudaw, adding that the number of casualties is likely to rise.
"On Wednesday evening, a car bomb detonated in the Physicians Street in Tikrit downtown, killing 11 and wounding 41 others," Omer Tariq, Tikrit’s mayor, told Rudaw.
Tariq added that the bombing targeted a crowded place as large numbers of people and patients visit the street to see doctors in the evenings.
Mahdi Taqi Amirli, a member of the city's council, told Rudaw that due to the size of the bomb, the number of victims will likely rise.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
Last week another 26 people were killed when a suicide bomber targeted a wedding party in a village nearby Tikrit.
Tikrit fell to ISIS in 2014, but was recaptured by the Iraqi army in April 2015.
