UPDATES: Twin suicide bombings kill 38 in Baghdad, wound over 100

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Tens of people were killed and more than 105 wounded in at least two suicide bombings at Baghdad’s al-Tayaran Square on Monday morning.

 

Iraqi police and health officials reported 38 people were killed in the blasts and at least 105 have been wounded.

Saad Maan, the Iraqi Interior Ministry’s spokesman announced at least 80 people were wounded.

“The bombings were carried out by two terrorists wearing explosive belts,” Saad Maan, spokesman for the Joint Operations Command said according to AFP.

A double suicide bombing targeted the square where day laborers gather in the early hours waiting for jobs.

Tayaran is a major intersection in eastern Baghdad between Sadr city and al-Jumariyah bridge over the Euphrates.

No group has claimed responsibility.

The number of large attacks in Baghdad has significantly decreased since the liberation of Iraq from ISIS last year, although remnants of the extremist group linger.

A suicide bomb on Saturday targeted the convoy of the head of Baghdad’s provincial council in the city’s Adan neighborhood killing eight and injuring 10 others.
