Iraqi army completes third pontoon bridge for Mosul battle
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region—The Iraqi army completed a third pontoon bridge over the Tigris River south of Mosul, it announced on Tuesday.
Completing this bridge is part of the logistical preparation for the Mosul offensive. The bridge can accommodate both civilian and military vehicles, according to an Iraqi army official.
“The engineering team of the Iraqi army has completed the pontoon bridge on the Tigris River south of Mosul on Tuesday,” said Brigadier Najim Hamadi, head of engineering at the 16th division of the Iraqi army, in a press statement.
“The bridge is unique in that it is very strong and can carry normal vehicles on the roads, as well as the combat armored vehicles,” he added.
The bridge will play a key role in allowing forces to approach Mosul and “will contribute to facilitating quick transport of forces to Mosul.”
This is the third bridge of its kind. Iraqi forces have installed a pontoon bridge across the Tigris River connecting the Makhmur and Qayyara districts south Mosul.
Another bridge spans the Zab River in Gwer, connecting the town with the al-Hamdaniya district, 25 kilometres from Mosul.
