ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kirkuk province recorded over one hundred coronavirus cases in educational institutions alone amid a noticeable increase in the number of infections, an official told state media on Tuesday.

The province’s health department reported 101 COVID-19 infections “among students and educational bodies,” Kirkuk Health Director Nabil Hamdi Bushnaq said, noting that several others have also been tested.

Kirkuk reported 313 cases on Tuesday, according to data from the health ministry.

Coronavirus cases in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region are on the rise following a decline in infections and the detection of the first cases of the new Omicron variant on Thursday.

Kirkuk has not reported any cases of Omicron, according to Hamdi.

Iraq started recording over a thousand daily cases earlier this week following its previous decrease, reporting two hundred to three hundred cases every 24 hours.

It warned of a new wave of the virus that could be “more severe” than the previous ones on Sunday.

Coronavirus infections in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region soared over the summer during a surge in Delta cases. Both areas registered high numbers of infections and deaths.

The increase in infections contributed to an increased demand for vaccines. Over 8.7 million people have been vaccinated in Iraq, according to the health ministry's latest data.

To date, Iraq has recorded 2,100,518 cases and 24,220 deaths since the start of the pandemic, including in the Kurdistan Region.
