ERBIL, Kurdistan Region—Iraqi forces repelled a multi-pronged Islamic State (ISIS) attack on Qayyara on Saturday.

ISIS used three suicide car bombs in the attack, which resulted in casualties, including two officers, in the brigades based in the Ragih area west of Qayyara, al Jazeera reported, citing military sources.

The Iraqi air force assisted in defeating the militants.

Also on Saturday, ISIS militants have reportedly infiltrated the town of Shargat, recapturing the mayoral headquarters. Iraqi security authorities have prohibited all travel into the town.

ISIS has often launched attacks, mainly suicide vehicle bombs, to destabilize areas they have lost to Iraqi and Peshmerga forces.

Qayyara, 60 kilometres south of Mosul, was retaken from ISIS by the Iraqi security forces in late August.
