KIRKUK, Iraq - The remaining medicine waste that is collected by Kirkuk’s Azadi hospital gets burned, bothering the citizens of Kirkuk.
The annoying smell of the waste fills the air, and the citizens that live around the Karama neighborhood claim that the smell is harassing them.
“They start to burn the waste around 1:00 to 1:30 pm. The smell is pretty bad,” said Luqman Haji, a resident of the Karama neighborhood. "Our neighborhood is all complaining about it."
Residents of the neighborhood have filed complaints against Kirkuk's health department, calling for an immediate stop to the process.
"My shop is in front of the hospital," said Salar Hassan, another resident of the Karama neighborhood. "I always have to shut my door because of the smell.”
Kirkuk's health director said they were trying to find a proper solution after they discovered that the process harassed residents of the neighborhoods.
Kirkuk Health Director Nabil Hamdi told Rudaw that the “oven has been built by a Japanese company since the beginning of the hospital.”
“The waste has increased lately and the houses have been built around the hospital illegally, but we are planning to build a big oven outside the city in collaboration with Kirkuk municipality,” he added.
