ISIS wife, child shot while surrendering to Iraq Army
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The wife of an Islamic State militant and her child were shot as the woman tried to turn herself in to the Iraqi Army, Anbar province officials said Monday.
“The woman who escaped from her husband with her only son continued approaching the army checkpoint despite being shot, which resulted in injuring both of them," a senior officer in the Iraqi Army told Rudaw.
The woman reportedly escaped the jihadist organization in the ISIS-held city of Ramadi with her son and meant to turn herself in to authorities in the Hamriya district of Anbar.
"The family consists of a woman and her son. While they were trying to approach the army checkpoint to surrender, shots were fired in the fear they were suicide bombers," added the officer who wished to remain anonymous.
They woman and her son were transferred to the hospital immediately, the officer added.
ISIS seized control of Ramadi on May 17, sending Iraqi forces racing out of the city in a major loss despite the support of US-led airstrikes targeting the extremists' positions.
Experts believe capturing the Sunni city is the second-most significant defeat of Iraqi security forces after Mosul’s fall last year.
