ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The US Central Command on Tuesday said it has successfully eliminated hundreds of suspected Islamic State (ISIS) members and leaders in the past two months in unilateral and joint strikes with Iraqi and Syrian security forces.

“Since August 29, in partnership with security forces in Iraq and Syria, U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) conducted 95 Defeat ISIS (D-ISIS) operations, some of which included unilateral strikes in Syria,” CENCOM said in a statement.

The strikes “resulted in 163 terrorists killed and 33 captured, including over 30 senior and mid-level ISIS leaders,” it added.

In the past 60 days, CENTCOM conducted “95 defeats ISIS operations,” some of which were in partnership with local forces in Syria and Iraq. The strikes have degraded the militants’ capabilities to “operate and to plan attacks.”

In a previous statement on October 28, CENTCOM said it had “conducted a series of strikes against several known ISIS camps in Syria,” resulting in the death of 35 ISIS operatives.

ISIS rose to power and seized swathes of Iraqi and Syrian land in a brazen offensive in 2014, declaring a so-called “caliphate.”

While the group was declared territorially defeated in 2017 and 2019, respectively, it still continues to pose serious security risks through hit-and-run attacks, bombings, and abductions, especially across the vast expanses of the Syrian desert as well as several Iraqi provinces.
