Katyusha rocket wounds child in Baghdad's Green Zone

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — A child was wounded in a rocket attack on Baghdad’s Green Zone overnight, according to the Iraqi Security Media Cell. This is the latest in nearly a dozen similar attacks on international targets in the Iraqi capital in a month.

"A Katyusha rocket was launched from the Ali Al-Saleh area of Baghdad towards the Green Zone, where it landed next to a house near El Bilad TV," reads a statement from the Iraqi Security Media Cell.

The cell says that the rocket "resulted in the injury of a child and damage to the house."

No group has claimed the attack, but the US has attributed past rocket attacks on sites of international importance to Iran-backed militias who it says are looking to further inflame US-Iran tensions.

A second katyusha rocket was "seized" in the Umm al-Azam area prior to being fired, adds the statement. The assailants were planning to target Taji military base, which lies north of the Iraqi capital city, and hosts US military personnel in the country to advise and train troops in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS). Umm al-Azam is 32 kilometers southeast of the base.

Sunday's attacks are the first of its kind since Iraqi Counter Terrorism Service (ICTS) personnel raided the headquarters of the Iran-backed Kataib Hezbollah militia in Baghdad province on June 26, detaining at least 14 fighters of the group who were accused of recent rocket attacks in Baghdad.

Hours after the release of their fighters three days later, Kataib Hezbollah vowed to remain keep up their ‘resistance’.

Kataib Hezbollah is an Iranian-backed militia falling under the umbrella of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), a predominantly Shiite militia network known in Arabic as Hashd al-Shaabi.

Four rockets landed inside Baghdad’s Green Zone two weeks ago.

The Iraqi government has long promised to capture those behind the attacks.
