ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Sunday called on the Iraqi government to compensate Feyli Kurds who were subjected to mass displacement and stripped of their citizenship among other crimes by Saddam Hussein’s former Baathist regime.

“The systematic persecution of hundreds of thousands of Feyli Kurds, their forced relocation, and the revocation of their citizenship under the racist policies of the former Baathist regime were carried out because of the Feyli Kurds’ adherence to their Kurdish identity,” Barzani said on the forty-first anniversary of the persecution of the Kurdish group, which adheres to Shiite Islam.

Barzani said that the recognition of the crime as genocide by the High Tribunal was “a just ruling” that places the government before a legal and moral duty to compensate victims.

“We urge the Federal Government to meet its legal and moral obligations and reimburse the victims of the mass crimes against the Feyli Kurds for the unlawful confiscation of their properties, revocation of their citizenship, and a range of other serious crimes committed against them under the former Baathist regime,” Barzani stated.

A large number of Feyli Kurds were subjected to a major campaign of displacement during Saddam Hussein’s regime by issuing the dissolved Revolutionary Command Council Resolution 666, which deprived the group of Iraqi nationality.
