Iraq to complete Faw port project a year early

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraq will complete the grand port of Faw nearly a year ahead of schedule, an official from the Iraqi Ministry of Transport said on Friday.

“The work in the grand Faw port project is being completed faster than planned, as a result of the accelerated pace of work to complete the project,” Anmar Abdel Moneim Al-Safi, Director of Media and Relations at the General Company for Iraqi Ports at the ministry told Iraqi state media.

“It is agreed upon and according to the signed contract that the project will be completed by the end of the year 2025, but in a quick work manner and without any delay or obstacles, the project will be completed before its scheduled date by the end of the year 2024,” he added.

Al-Faw is located south of Umm Qasr, Iraq’s main seaport. The new port will be deeper than Qasr to allow larger container ships.

The construction deal is worth $2.625 billion for the first phase of the port, Reuters reported in December 2020. Farhan al-Fartousi, Iraq’s director general at the General Company for Ports, at the time said construction is expected to take less than four years and they are willing to sign contracts with other companies for the second and third phases.

The port has been a dream for decades, but has been repeatedly delayed because of successive conflicts.
