Deadly rockets rain down on ISIS from an airbase it once destroyed

As ISIS militants are pushed back by Iraqi and Kurdish Peshmerga forces on the ground, they are also pounded by a powerful rocket from Qayyara airbase.

The US military fires HIMARS missiles at ISIS positions in Mosul 70 kilometers away. The rocket is powerful, accurate and deadly.

Around 800 American servicemen are here to support Iraqi and Kurdish forces in their fight against ISIS.

These HIMARS missiles are called in when the advancing troops want to avoid collateral damage or find an air strike too powerful for a certain target.

The Qayyara airbase is strategically located in northwest Iraq and proven useful in these last stages of the war against ISIS.

Hundreds of these rockets have been fired from this base in less than three months.

ISIS captured this base in 2014 and held it for two years before the Iraqi army recaptured it in July. Before they were forced out the militants destroyed the runways and demolished much of the infrastructure.

US military engineering teams came in and repaired one runway followed by specialists who set up this command and control center.

They help all coalition and Iraqi planes with landing, cargo delivery, maintenance and air traffic control.

The Qayyara air base has changed hands many times in the past decade, but for now the Americans and other coalition members are here and they will continue their fire against ISIS until it has been defeated.
