Iraqi gov’t announces progress in Anbar campaign
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — In a continuation of the Anbar military campaign, some 32 Islamic State militants have been killed, Iraqi officials claimed Wednesday.
According to a statement released by the Iraqi Interior Ministry, Iraqi security forces in corporation with the Shiite militia movement known as the Hashd al-Shaabi, or Popular Mobilization Units, hunted down 10 militants near Habbaniya in central Iraq.
The statement added that in a separate operation US-led coalition airstrikes blasted several ISIS bases west of Samara, killing 21 ISIS militants and destroying two ISIS vehicles.
In January 2014 ISIS militants swept into Fallujah and parts of Ramadi in Iraq's Anbar province, which Iraqi security forces abandoned. Since then Iraqi security forces backed by US-led coalition airstrikes have been fighting the terror group to retake ISIS footholds in Anbar province.
