ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A suspected Turkish drone on Thursday hit a house in Shingal district, causing material damage. Kurdish counter-terrorism forces said two fighters affiliated to Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) were injured.
PKK media reported that a “Turkish drone” targeted a civilian house, causing damage to the building, adding that information about casualties was not available at the time.
PKK-linked Shingal Women Units (YJS) said the targeted house is located near a Yazidi temple.
Erbil-based Directorate General of Counter Terrorism (CTD) said the drone hit a military base of the PKK-affiliated Shingal Resistance Units (YBS), injuring two of its fighters.
The attack is the latest in a series of deadly drone strikes by Ankara on the Kurdistan Region, claiming to target PKK fighters and their alleged proxies.
The PKK is an armed group fighting for the increased political and cultural rights of Kurds in Turkey and has waged an armed insurgency against Ankara for decades. It established YBS and some other groups in Shingal after the Islamic State (ISIS) attacked the town in 2014.
The presence of the YBS and several other forces in the district has been blamed for insecurity which has prevented thousands of its residents who fled due to the war on ISIS from returning.
Turkey considers the PKK and all its alleged offshoots in Iraq and Syria as terrorists.
