Iran sentences 2 to death in connection with Shiraz attack

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A court in Iran on Saturday handed down death sentences to two people in connection with a deadly attack on a Shiite shrine last year. Another three defendants were given prison terms.

The two sentenced to death were convicted of “aiding in the corruption on earth, rebellion and action against the security of the country,” the chief justice of Fars province Kazem Mousavi announced, according to Mizan Online.

Mousavi said the pair was directly involved in arming and guiding the main perpetrator of the attack who was killed in a clash with police forces during his arrest.

Thirteen people were killed when a gunman attacked the Shiite holy site of Shah Cheragh in Shiraz last October. Authorities quickly blamed Sunni Muslim extremists.

Three other defendants were handed prison sentences of five, 15, and 25 years for membership in the Islamic State group (ISIS).

All five convictions can be appealed.
