Iran says first phase of S-300 missiles from Russia complete
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The first phase of S-300 air defense missile systems from Russia has been completed, Iran's Foreign Minister spokesman Hossein Jaberi Ansari said on Monday.
"We had already announced that despite several times of change in time of delivery, the deal is on its path of implementation and today I should announce that the first phase of the agreement is implemented and the process will continue," Ansari told a press conference in Tehran according to Iran's Tasnim news.
New agreements will have to be reached with Moscow before the missile systems are actually delivered.
Iran initially ordered the missiles back in 2007. Russia froze the delivery in 2010 after fresh sanctions were placed on Iran over its nuclear program. After the nuclear deal was reached between Iran and the P5+1 powers in July 2015 however Moscow has agreed to deliver the systems.
Israel is wary about Iran taking delivery of such advanced missiles which can shoot down jet fighters and cruise missiles, some of the later variants of the system can even shoot down ballistic missiles.
