ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iran on Monday deemed a recent resolution against the country “irresponsible,” saying it violates the “spirit” of the nuclear negotiations as it urged the United States to comply with the requirements of the talks.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi on Monday received the new Swiss ambassador to Iran Nadine Olivieri Lozano, discussing a variety of topics, including the recent resolution adopted by a UN nuclear watchdog in June, reported state media.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) adopted a motion from the US, Britain, France, and Germany to censure Iran over its failure to explain the discovery of enriched uranium at three sites that it did not declare.

Raisi stated that the resolution represented the countries’ “paradoxical behavior” at a time when the European Union-mediated negotiations with the US to revive the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) continue.

“The US must decide to abide by the requirements of negotiations and agreements,” Iranian state media cited Raisi as saying.

Iran and the US have been engaged in indirect talks since April last year aimed at reviving the JCPOA, which Washington withdrew from in 2018 under former president Donald Trump. Iran insists that the US must lift its crippling sanctions, including those on Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and provide a guarantee that future US administrations will not be able to withdraw from the deal.

US President Joe Biden is embarking upon the process of rolling back on his predecessor’s withdrawal, as he attempts to return to the deal. However, the talks have yielded little results with the latest round being held in the Qatari capital of Doha last week.

The US State Department said the talks made “no progress.”

Raisi on Thursday slammed Western countries saying they were not “serious” in the negotiations to return to the 2015 nuclear deal.

Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator on Sunday said the date and venue for the next round of talks is being settled.
