Joe Biden a more promising president: Iranian FM

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Democratic Presidential Candiate Joe Biden is  a more promising candidate for US President, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif has told a US news outlet.

"The statements by the Biden camp have been more promising, but we will have to wait and see," Zarif told CBS News on Monday.

Former Vice President  Biden has previously said that he would enter into negotiations with Iran regarding the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) accord signed during the Obama administration back in 2015,  which limited Iran's nuclear program in exchange for a lift on US sacntions.

US President Donald Trump withdrew the US from the agreement in 2018 and reinstated sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

However, Zarif shut down any talk of renegotiating the agreement.

“If we wanted to do that, we would have done it with President Trump four years ago."

Millions of Americans are set to vote in Tuesday’s presidential election.

Iran's Supreme leader Ali Khamenei said that the results of Tuesday's elections would not affect Iranian policy in a Tuesday message on state television.

"In relation to America, our policy is measured and clear and this policy does not change with the coming and going of individuals. Today is the election in America, some talk about who comes and who goes, what happens if this person comes and what happens if that person goes," he said.

The Trump administration has imposed multiple sanctions on Iran since 2016, the latest being on October 30 against Iran's petroleum industry.
