Iranians on Friday poured into the streets of Tehran in a state-sponsored rally to mourn Gen. Qasem Soleimani, commander of the elite Quds force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) who was
killed in a US drone strike in Baghdad in the early hours of Friday morning.
Tehran has vowed revenge for the killing and US allies are urging restraint to prevent a further escalation of violence in the region.
Mourners carried images of Soleimani and signs condemning the US and Israel. One sign read that the blood of Soleimani will be repaid only with the blood of US President Donald Trump.
Others carried banners saying, “We are all Soleimani” and “The more you kill us, the more awaken we become.”
“Today, all over Iran, people say ‘Death to America,’” another banner read.
