ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iran on Monday responded to the latest episode of United States sanctions on Tehran, calling Washington’s continuance of the embargos an “addiction” and saying it represents the policy of American dominance.
“The White House’s addiction to sanctioning and its instrumental use indicates the American dominance policy, and the changing of governments in the US does not make a difference in its approach,” Iranian state media cited Nasser Kanaani, the spokesperson for Iran’s foreign ministry as saying.
Earlier in the day, the US Treasury announced blacklisting six companies under the pretext of helping Iran in the export of "millions of dollars worth" of petroleum and petrochemical products to East Asia.
Kanaani stated that US President Joe Biden’s administration has continued and “expanded” former president Donald Trump’s “failed” maximum pressure policy, as Washington proceeds to issue sanctions even during the ongoing negotiations to restore the 2015 nuclear deal.
Tehran and Washington have engaged in talks for over a year aimed at securing a return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with no success. In return for restoring the deal, Iran has demanded that the US lifts its sanctions on the country.
The spokesperson added that Iran will have a “firm, strong, and immediate” response to the US’ insistence on the embargo and that Tehran will take the necessary measures to neutralize the impact of the sanctions on Iran’s economy.
Trump unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA and pursued a “maximum pressure” campaign of heavy sanctions against Iran, aiming to strike a new deal that would also monitor Tehran’s ballistic missile program.
