Iran continues to supply Iraq's Basra with electricity
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iran resumed supplying Iraq's southern province of Basra with electricity after cutting it off a few weeks ago due to Baghdad’s failure to pay for the power.
According to Iran's Tasnim news agency on Monday, Iran began resupplying electricity after an Iraqi delegation went to Tehran to resolve the issue.
Iran is currently building a natural pipeline to the Iraqi province to supply it with gas. It says the pipeline is about 82 percent complete and in its final stages.
The pipeline will supply 50 million cubic meters of Iranian gas a day to Basra, which will generate electricity to give that province the 3,500 megawatts of power it needs a day.
The current electricity grid is unable to meet these demands and consequently suffers from outages.
