ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Israeli military said on Thursday they are trying to confirm the death of Palestinian Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar after a recent Israeli operation in Gaza, while an Israeli army’s radio broadcaster already has reported Sinwar’s killing.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said it “eliminated” three “terrorists” during operations in Gaza without elaborating, adding that they are “checking the possibility that one of the terrorists was Yahya Sinwar. At this stage, the identity of the terrorists cannot be confirmed.”

Sinwar is believed to be one of the architects behind the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, that has triggered a deadly continued war spilling into Lebanon.

The Israeli army radio station said Israel has informed its regional allies that Sinwar “is no longer alive.”

Hamas has not commented on the issue.

Sinwar was chosen as the Palestinian group’s new leader after his predecessor Ismael Haniyeh was killed on July 31 in an apparent Israeli strike in Tehran, Iran. Israel has denied involvement in the plot.

Iran, the arch-foe of Israel, launched nearly 200 missiles at Israel on October 1 as retaliation for the death of Haniyeh and other pro-Iran figures.
