Several rockets target Turkish soldiers in Bashiqa base

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Turkish forces in Nineveh province were targeted with several rockets late Saturday night, the Kurdish counter-terrorism forces announced. No casualties were reported.

Three rockets were fired at Zilkan military base and the Turkish forces responded to the attack, Kurdistan Region’s counter-terror directorate said in a statement.

No loss of live or material damage were reported, it added.

Ten kilometers away from the town of Bashiqa, the Zilkan base is home to Turkish personnel.

Turkey has not yet commented on the offensive.

The base has been a target of several rockets previously.

Two rockets were fired at Zilkan base on December 27, an official told Rudaw at the time.

Another rocket attack on the facility in April killed a Turkish soldier while two other civilians were injured.

Turkey-Iraq relations were strained in the wake of the deployment of some 150 Turkish soldiers to Iraq in December 2015. The troops are still present in the area despite calls from Iraqi officials for them to leave.
