ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The US Navy has released a video claiming to show an Iranian military boat firing rockets near an American aircraft carrier and French frigate in the Persian Gulf, as proof of earlier claims that Iran had fired near coalition warships.
The black-and-white video shows an Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) boat allegedly firing rockets near the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier as it sails alongside a missile destroyer and French naval frigate
The video was shot from an American Seahawk helicopter operating in the vicinity.
The US Navy reported la day after Christmas that that Iran had fired rockets "in close proximity" to the coalition warships.
The unguided rockets were, according to the US Navy, fired "within an internationally recognized maritime traffic lane," in which the ships were operating in support of the ongoing US-led coalition military campaign against Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists in both Iraq and Syria.
Iran claimed on December 31, however, that no such incident had taken place, dubbing the story "false" and saying that Washington's claims were "akin to psychological warfare."
By releasing the video, the US Navy clearly hopes it is sufficient evidence to refute Tehran's denial.
