Hamas executes one of its own commanders for ‘moral violations’
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Hamas, the ruling group in the Palestinian Gaza Strip enclave, has recently executed one of its own commanders for what it called "moral and behavioral violations."
The group claimed on Twitter that Mahmoud Eshtwei confessed to this before being killed.
While the movement did not specify what these "violations" were, such practices are uncommon.
Since taking over the coastal strip in 2007, Hamas has executed many Palestinians it dislikes on the accusation of being spies for Israel. Especially during times of war, it has often executed or tortured them publicly, in clear warning to Palestinians who might think about challenging Hamas rule or policies.
But as pointed out by AP, this appears to be the first time the group has killed one of its own members during peacetime.
